Teaching is also a big part of Lisa Congdon’s creative life. She goes into what she loves about teaching and letting go of the preciousness of her work when teaching students how to “art” using her techniques. Lisa and the girls discuss copying vs. ‘being influenced by’, and how to embrace your own voice, ideas, and “wonkiness”.

Amanda + Kristin pick Lisa’s brain about being personal & political, and using her voice/platform to talk about topics she cares about. The girls discuss putting out messages of self-love, worthiness, self-care and being an influencer vs. being an impacter.

EP. 81 // ON SURVIVAL...

HAPPY FIRST MONDAY OF SUMMER 2019! Amanda ‘survived’ her first year back to teaching and she + Kristin reflect on what it means to be in ‘survival mode’ and suggest that even when you are in that mode, good things can happen and you can be thriving. We’d love for you to have a listen!

wing mural by Kelsey Montague in Nashville, TN // #whatliftsyou

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K dive into a word that’s been on Amanda’s mind lately as she’s nearing the end of this unexpected jolt back into teaching: SURVIVAL.

We survive hard things we don’t think we can. We survive loss and anxiety and chronic conditions and negative emotions and awkward situations and bad days and rejection and (the list goes on)...

The girls dive into the coexistence of pain + hard things alongside positivity + productivity. WE ARE NOT BEING FAIR TO OURSELVES when our responses to ‘hard things’ are negative ones.

The core idea of this episode: It’s fucking hard to be alive. How are YOU surviving it?!

EP. 76 // WOMANHOOD, man!

According to The Hill: On Wednesday, Governor Kay Ivey signed H.B. 314 — a near-total ban on abortion — into law. With her signature, Governor Ivey made Alabama the fifth state — after Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia and Ohio — to attempt to restrict abortion just this year.

ENTER: Ep. 76 of the podcast, and in light of the recent ruling, A + K felt the need to contribute to the conversation about womanhood and our female bodies and minds and how we can be resourceful considering where we are at as women in America.

EP 76 WOMANHOOD blog post - Crafty Ass Female - blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K comment on the politics surrounding reproduction, and Kristin brings home the point that reproductive rights are complicated.

“My body, my body choice” is not just about abortion. We have a right to birth control. We have a right to a safe gynecologist. We have as right to vaccinations to treat an STD. This idea that people are just “pro-life” or “pro-choice” is nonsense because it is NEVER just that simple.

One in four women have had an elective abortion, and A + K share their personal stories.

It’s a great follow up to our physical health episode and is kind of a continuation of our feminism episode.

EP. 75 // PHYSICAL HEALTH

Welcome to episode 75! We are three-quarters of the way to having launched 100 episodes and that is a milestone Amanda + Kristin never even imagined they would get to. Let’s go!

Episodes 22 & 31 of the podcast were specifically about MENTAL HEALTH, and with the spring season and swarmer weather upon us, A + K thought it the perfect time for an episode talking about their physical health stories thus far.

EP 75 PHYSICAL HEALTH - Crafty Ass Female - blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

After multiple episodes on Mental Health, A + K talk about another aspect of health in this episode: PHYSICAL HEALTH. They start with NUTRITION & Kristin relates how figuring out what foods makes her feel the best has been the best thing for her body.

Amanda brings up MOTIVATION and how the anger + grief of her breakup a few months ago was the HARD RESET that allowed for her to snap back into eating well and going g to gym regularly.

The EXERCISE aspect of physical health is opened up and while Amanda finds a combination of aerobic + strength training works best for her, while Kristin has found out that exercise tends to exacerbate her. physical pain.

The girls then dive into the importance of getting enough REST + slowing down enough to focus on taking care of ourselves.

EP. 74 // What's My 'Thing'? REVISITED

Almost seventy episodes ago, Amanda + Kristin launched episode 8 of this podcast exploring the question WHAT’S MY ‘THING’?. With this season’s theme of GROWTH, the girls thought it was appropriate to revisit this topic and talk about how their perspectives have evolved, inspired by the recent conversation they had with Austin Kleon about his new book Keep Going.

74 WHATS MY THING revisted BLOG POST.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K revisit the topic of finding & identifying your ‘THING’. After talking with the wonderful Austin Kleon about his new book Keep Going, A & K felt the need to do a bit of a corrective to what the original episode on this was about.

The girls talk about how this podcast has become both of their ‘thing’, but only through commitment, collaboration, and a consistent weekly routine.

‘Take the edge off’ is something the girls also discuss as an important aspect of discovering your things. When the stakes are high any and all decisions regarding your ‘thing’ become big risks, which can intern disrupt your creativity and corrupt your inspiration.

Finally, the girls have a laugh as Kristin describes the ever-changing nature of life & finding a ‘thing’ with this phrase: “Here it is, and there it went.”

EP. 73 // Growth in Scrapbooking

A year and a half ago, Amanda + Kristin launched episode 10 of this podcast answering the question WHY WE SCRAPBOOK. With this season’s theme of GROWTH, we thought it was appropriate to revisit this question. We talk about how we’ve evolved our documenting hobby up until this point, and the shifts in our approach & execution.

EP 73 BLOG POST.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K talk about scrapbooking as an amazing tool for personal growth since it causes you to be reflective, and how the craft of memory keeping blends the past, present, and future all at once.

The girls discuss supplies and not treating them so preciously. Also, A + K make a point that choosing supplies is not the only choice you need to make for a project. Crafters don’t realize that choosing the approach is equally if not more important.

How to extrapolate EASE and JOY in scrapbooking is what the girls are goaling to get across in the episode, and also suggest focusing on using all FIVE SENSES to pay attention to the little details of your life.

EP. 72 // Growth with Plants & Gardening

Happy Earth Day, lovelies! Amanda + Kristin couldn’t have possibly moved through this season’s theme of GROWTH without a whole episode dedicated to plants and greenery and herbs and fresh, backyard-grown produce and all the metaphors for life that can be extracted from your garden.

72 PLANTS blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K talk about how they both ‘got into’ plants and how you can’t get more ‘off the phone’ than planting and being connected to your garden.

The girls discuss going through seasons and season of learning curves, dormant periods, and dispelling the myth of ‘you need to know what you’re doing’.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Kristin on gardening:

“You can screw up so much and still be so successful!”

Kristin on switching ‘GROWTH’ with ‘DEVELOPMENT’:

“Sometimes when we get stuck with like, ‘Why am I not growing? What is wrong with my growth here?’ I want us to switch to the word DEVELOPMENT, and say like, ‘Why am I not developing?’ and see if that changes anything for you.”

EP. 71 // Metalsmithing & Business w/ MEGAN AUMAN

We are so excited to bring you Megan Auman - designer, metalsmith, educator, and entrepreneur who has built a multi-faceted business around her passion for art and business - on the show today.

In addition to running her eponymous jewelry line, where she sells her work to stores across the US and online, she is the founder of Designing an MBA, which provides business thinking for artists and makers. Her latest projects are Artists & Profit Makers, an online community and mentorship program, and a new ebook, Try It and See: How to Get Sh*t Done While Overanalyzing Everything.  Megan lives and works in Jonestown, PA, a small town about 90 miles west of Philly.

EP 71 MEGAN AUMAN bloig post.jpg

SUMMARY //

Megan Auman starts off by telling A + K her creative backstory and how she came into metalsmithing.

She talks about diving in head first exhibiting at her first trade show with no experience, with only two months to prepare for it, and repeating everything she heard in the next booth over. She says, “If you wait ‘till you’re ready, you’re never gonna be ready. Sometimes you have to jump in.”

Plus, Megan talks about the big ‘P’ WORD in running your own business: PRICING. She brings up the term 'artificial pricing’ for the first time on the podcast, and how ‘dream jobs’ are still JOBS and ‘work we love’ is still WORK!

Megan makes a case for what her jewelry has that big box stores don’t: a story, a REAL person behind it, and a connection. She finishes the conversation talking about the hashtag #endstudioshame, to end the anxiety + shame about how messy & un-Pinterest worthy the creative process in your physical space can get.

ERIN MAYA blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

Erin Maya starts off by telling A + K what she’s been up to since grammar school (haa haa!) and what was involved in her track to being the musician and artist she is today.

Erin also shares her perspective on her past ‘broken’ relationship, how she feels they were both not ready for each other, and how going into massage therapy was the best thing she ever did because it forced her to have new experiences.

EP. 69 // KEEP GOING w/ AUSTIN KLEON

Amanda + Kristin couldn’t have planned any better that episode 69 (wink, wink) of the podcast would feature our very first MALE GUEST: the one, the only, AUSTIN KLEON! Laaaaaadies! We made it happen!

69 AUSTIN KLEON blog post.jpg

Austin Kleon is the New York Times bestselling author of three illustrated books: Steal Like An ArtistNewspaper Blackout, and Show Your Work!  His next book is Keep Going, a guide to staying creative in good times and bad. His books have over a million copies in print and have been translated into over two dozen languages.

He speaks about creativity in the digital age for organizations such as Pixar, Google, SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. In previous lives, he worked as a librarian, a web designer, and an advertising copywriter. He grew up in the cornfields of Ohio, but now he lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and sons.

SUMMARY //

Austin Kleon talks to A + K about his new book Keep Going and how it’s a bit of a corrective to the first two books in his three-part series.

Austin also shares his thoughts on library tourism, the importance of sharing the work of others, and his eye-roll reaction to the phrase ‘creative journey’.

A + K + Austin also discuss (1) how participating in a rich, creative life without the pressure of monetization can be a way to ‘build up your immune system’, (2) how feminism is the way for men to be free from their nightmares, and (3) how you should metaphorically try to ‘be your own gardener’.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Austin on how important it is to be ‘kept in check’ as a creative person :

“I wonder who says ‘NO’ to J.K. Rowling…and as a creative person, that is a HUGE liability. …When you’re starting out, you’re like, ‘That’s what everyone dreams about.’ They’re like, ‘If I had a million dollars, I’d make this & that & blah blah blah’ and it’s like, no: What you need is - early on - you need to find people who can say ‘no’ to you in a constructive way. …and people who really care about you and really care about your work and can kind of…keep you in check a little bit and be editors - real, strong, editors - and then when you get famous or rich, you need to keep those people around you….those are exactly the people you want in your crew because they will keep you from doing stupid things…like, Kanye West need those people…”

Austin on feminism :

“I think true feminism is a vision of the world in which hierarchical structures are broken down and there’s a kind of egalitarian thing that goes on and the way that I would put it is: my idea of feminism jives really closely with what I’ve discovered about art, which is the traditional notion of art is that it comes from the great genius, that there are these special people in the world - and they’re always dead white guys - and they come and they visit us and they grace us with their brilliance, and the rest of us are the audience, we witness…and the vision of art I always thought was a bit of a corrective was the idea of scenius.

…and God, I don’t want to sound like I’m man-splaining feminism…(but) for me, feminism…is literally a breaking down of the patriarchal, hierarchical structure…you’re collapsing that whole idea that there are people ‘on top’ and there are people ‘on bottom’.

…I just see feminism as a ‘way out’ for everybody. Like look: if you can get down with this, it’s gonna free you, man. This is gonna take you out of your own nightmares. It really will, like, TRUST ME.”
