EP. 72 // Growth with Plants & Gardening

Happy Earth Day, lovelies! Amanda + Kristin couldn’t have possibly moved through this season’s theme of GROWTH with a whole episode dedicated to plants and greenery and herbs and fresh, backyards grown produce and all the metaphors for life that can be extracted from your garden.

EP. 72 // Growth with Plants and Gardening - Crafty Ass Female

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K talk about how they both ‘got into’ plants and how you can’t get more ‘off the phone’ than planting and being connected to your garden.

The girls discuss going through seasons and season of learning curves, dormant periods, and dispelling the myth of ‘you need to know what you’re doing’.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Kristin on gardening:

“You can screw up so much and still be so successful!”

Kristin on switching ‘GROWTH’ with ‘DEVELOPMENT’:

“Sometimes when we get stuck with like, ‘Why am I not growing? What is wrong with my growth here?’ I want us to switch to the word DEVELOPMENT, and say like, ‘Why am I not developing?’ and see if that changes anything for you.”

EP. 71 // Metalsmithing & Business w/ MEGAN AUMAN

We are so excited to bring you Megan Auman - designer, metalsmith, educator, and entrepreneur who has built a multi-faceted business around her passion for art and business - on the show today.

In addition to running her eponymous jewelry line, where she sells her work to stores across the US and online, she is the founder of Designing an MBA, which provides business thinking for artists and makers. Her latest projects are Artists & Profit Makers, an online community and mentorship program, and a new ebook, Try It and See: How to Get Sh*t Done While Overanalyzing Everything.  Megan lives and works in Jonestown, PA, a small town about 90 miles west of Philly.

EP 71 MEGAN AUMAN bloig post.jpg

SUMMARY //

Megan Auman starts off by telling A + K her creative backstory and how she came into metalsmithing.

She talks about diving in head first exhibiting at her first trade show with no experience, with only two months to prepare for it, and repeating everything she heard in the next booth over. She says, “If you wait ‘till you’re ready, you’re never gonna be ready. Sometimes you have to jump in.”

Plus, Megan talks about the big ‘P’ WORD in running your own business: PRICING. She brings up the term 'artificial pricing’ for the first time on the podcast, and how ‘dream jobs’ are still JOBS and ‘work we love’ is still WORK!

Megan makes a case for what her jewelry has that big box stores don’t: a story, a REAL person behind it, and a connection. She finishes the conversation talking about the hashtag #endstudioshame, to end the anxiety + shame about how messy & un-Pinterest worthy the creative process in your physical space can get.

EP. 70 // The Reckoning w/ ERIN MAYA

BABE ALERT! Today we have Erin Maya - the founder, songwriter and lead vocalist of ERIN MAYA AND THE RECKONING, and the back-up singer of NYC’s female melodic-punk band BABE PATROL - on the show. Kristin + Erin went to grammar school together, were both in Girl Scouts, and the two have reconnected for this episode to talk about Erin’s mission as an artist: to give witness to the unseen/unheard; to be part of art that is inclusive because visibility is the beating heart of art.

EP. 70 // ERIN MAYA - Crafty Ass Female.jpg

SUMMARY //

Erin Maya starts off by telling A + K what she’s been up to since grammar school (haa haa!) and what was involved in her track to being the musician and artist she is today.

Erin also shares her perspective on her past ‘broken’ relationship, how she feels they were both not ready for each other, and how going into massage therapy was the best thing she ever did because it forced her to have new experiences.

Erin opens up to Amanda + Kristin about the hardest part of leaving her ex, being rejected by the rebound guy, and singing words she had written in her journal.

EP. 69 // KEEP GOING w/ AUSTIN KLEON

Amanda + Kristin couldn’t have planned any better that episode 69 (wink, wink) of the podcast would feature our very first MALE GUEST: the one, the only, AUSTIN KLEON! Laaaaaadies! We made it happen!

EP. 69 // AUSTIN KLEON - Crafty Ass Female.jpg

Austin Kleon is the New York Times bestselling author of three illustrated books: Steal Like An ArtistNewspaper Blackout, and Show Your Work!  His next book is Keep Going, a guide to staying creative in good times and bad. His books have over a million copies in print and have been translated into over two dozen languages.

He speaks about creativity in the digital age for organizations such as Pixar, Google, SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. In previous lives, he worked as a librarian, a web designer, and an advertising copywriter. He grew up in the cornfields of Ohio, but now he lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and sons.

SUMMARY //

Austin Kleon talks to A + K about his new book Keep Going and how it’s a bit of a corrective to the first two books in his three-part series.

Austin also shares his thoughts on library tourism, the importance of sharing the work of others, and his eye-roll reaction to the phrase ‘creative journey’.

A + K + Austin also discuss (1) how participating in a rich, creative life without the pressure of monetization can be a way to ‘build up your immune system’, (2) how feminism is the way for men to be free from their nightmares, and (3) how you should metaphorically try to ‘be your own gardener’.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Austin on how important it is to be ‘kept in check’ as a creative person :

“I wonder who says ‘NO’ to J.K. Rowling…and as a creative person, that is a HUGE liability. …When you’re starting out, you’re like, ‘That’s what everyone dreams about.’ They’re like, ‘If I had a million dollars, I’d make this & that & blah blah blah’ and it’s like, no: What you need is - early on - you need to find people who can say ‘no’ to you in a constructive way. …and people who really care about you and really care about your work and can kind of…keep you in check a little bit and be editors - real, strong, editors - and then when you get famous or rich, you need to keep those people around you….those are exactly the people you want in your crew because they will keep you from doing stupid things…like, Kanye West need those people…”

Austin on feminism :

“I think true feminism is a vision of the world in which hierarchical structures are broken down and there’s a kind of egalitarian thing that goes on and the way that I would put it is: my idea of feminism jives really closely with what I’ve discovered about art, which is the traditional notion of art is that it comes from the great genius, that there are these special people in the world - and they’re always dead white guys - and they come and they visit us and they grace us with their brilliance, and the rest of us are the audience, we witness…and the vision of art I always thought was a bit of a corrective was the idea of scenius.

…and God, I don’t want to sound like I’m man-splaining feminism…(but) for me, feminism…is literally a breaking down of the patriarchal, hierarchical structure…you’re collapsing that whole idea that there are people ‘on top’ and there are people ‘on bottom’.

…I just see feminism as a ‘way out’ for everybody. Like look: if you can get down with this, it’s gonna free you, man. This is gonna take you out of your own nightmares. It really will, like, TRUST ME.”

SUMMARY //

In this episode, A + K talk about about where they are at with their personal growth. Kristin has been navigating the hills & valleys of her physical health, being a person who is in chronic pain, and shares her thoughts about telling that party of her story.
