EP. 84 // FINDING YOUR ARTISTIC VOICE w/ LISA CONGDON

Today we have THE ONE, THE ONLY Lisa Congon on the podcast! Fine artist, illustrator and author Lisa Congdon is best known for her colorful paintings and hand lettering. She works for clients around the world, and is the author of eight books, including the her latest: Find Your Artist Voice: The Essential Guide to Working Your Creative Magic.

EP 84 LISA CONGDON blog post - Crafty Ass Female.jpg

SUMMARY //

Lisa Congdon starts off by telling A + K about her “early mid-life crisis” and what her really intense desire to be creative manifested into. Lisa then goes into the greatest lesson writing her first book Art, Inc. taught her.

Teaching is also a big part of Lisa Congdon’s creative life. She goes into what she loves about teaching and letting go of the preciousness of her work when teaching students how to “art” using her techniques. Lisa and the girls discuss copying vs. ‘being influenced by’, and how to embrace your own voice, ideas, and “wonkiness”.

Amanda + Kristin pick Lisa’s brain about being personal & political, and using her voice/platform to talk about topics she cares about. The girls discuss putting out messages of self-love, worthiness, self-care and being an influencer vs. being an impacter.

EP. 40 // Cheeky Icons, Street Art & Stationery w/ Pinky Weber

We are so proud of how Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' - our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women - turned out! Today's episode is our LAST of this series, and we're going out with a BANG! (Next week's show will be the finale episode of Season 2 of the podcast.)

Today we have award-winning professional doodler, muralist shmuralist, zine queen, and donut enthusiast Pinky Weber on the podcast. She is the head of Pinky Weber Studio, Brooklyn’s finest female-run greeting card and accessory company, where wine o’clock starts promptly at 3 pm.

By injecting reality with unexpected and playful imagery, Pinky re-evaluates the relationship between humans and ordinary un-celebrated everyday objects. She uses her work as a platform to transform the most monotonous, bland items into precious, vibrant, exciting icons — forcing the viewer to reconsider their typical relationship to physical space and reality. Cheeky and cheerful, Pinky Weber is perfect for parties, pick-me-ups, and presents between pals.

EP 40 PINKY WEBER | Crafty Ass Female

SUMMARY //

So is Pinky her real name? (The girls get to that right away.) Also in this episode, Pinky talks about going to Parsons School of Art & Design, how Brooklyn and living in New York influences her work, and being a woman in the street art community.

Pinky also discusses her cheeky, cheerful style and her desire to make the world more fun. The girls discuss understanding the inspiration behind everyday inanimate objects + giving them personality.

Other gems in this episode: Pinky's approach to her booth at the NSS trade show, whether or not she reached her goals for NSS, her feelings on licensing her work, advice to artists who are just starting to make art, and what she had hired help actually help her do.

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE EP //

Pinky on how she's 'crafty' as RESOURCEFUL:

"I use both sides of the Swiffer® pad? (Haa Haa!) ...I think figuring out how to use my art in multiple ways and figuring out as many ways as possible that it works while still being ME. I really like doing illustration, I really like doing murals, I really like doing stationery...why can't I do all three?! ...

...and figuring out alternative ways where I don't have to go and sit at a cubicle and work, but still make money and be happy - even if it means putting more hours in, you know, having a tighter budget, eating dollar pizza four nights a week, that's fine. If I'm happy, you know, doing what I love just making ends meet, that's cool."

EP. 39 // Get your craft on w/ 30 Days of Lists w/ Kam Altar

Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' has been awesome - and will be continuing through the end of August. It is our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin are thrilled to be able to share with you every Monday.

Today we have Kam Altar from campfirechic.com on the podcast. Kam is the crafty ass lady behind 30 Days of Lists, the creative journaling challenge for people who love to make lists. Kam lives in Southern California with her big orange cat + husband. When she doesn't have her face glued to her phone, you can find her playing Overwatch, binging true crime podcasts, or crafting a cheese plate to split with her husband.

EPSIODE 39 - KAM from CAMPFIRECHIC | Crafty Ass Female.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, the girls talk to Kam about the origin story of her 30 Days of Lists challenge, how it's evolved, and gotten to the point where she now hosts it every March, September, + December of the year!

Kam + the girls also discuss all the different ways you can prep for the challenge and create your lists, whether it's in a notebook, in a pocket page album, on a post-it, as a blog post, or even as embroidery!!!

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE EP //

Kam on the origin story of 30 Days of Lists:

"I started 30 Days of Lists with two friends in March 2011. ...it all started because I was doing a lot of these 30 days of _blank_ kind of creative challenges that were really popular at the time...and it was kind of my first time seeing a lot of art journaling online...I was doing this scrapbooking thing and ...I really wanted to be a apart of these communities 'cause like all the 'cool blogger-girls' are doing it...and I really wanted to be involved...
...but I was having a hard time keeping up with the prompts, and I was also feeling really discouraged because only certain styles of documenting were being highlighted. So it was only the really pretty pages being shown as examples ...I was seeing all this creative work, all this HONEST story telling that wasn't being shared...
...so I wanted to start something that's low-impact, easy to jump into, and didn't have the expectations of excellence or a certain style...and the BIG thing we decided was: there's no wrong way to make a list."

EP. 38 // Philosophies on Small Business w/ Joanna Alberti

Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' is moving right along - and will be continuing through the end of August. It is our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin are thrilled to be able to share with you every Monday.

Today we have Joanna Alberti on the podcast. Joanna is an illustrator, product designer, and small shop owner located in Rochester, NY. She is the creator of philoSophies™ (pronounced fill-ahs-SO-fees) which is a greeting card + product line featuring the main character Sophie, her philosophies on different occasions, and inspirations on friendship, love, and confidence.

EP 38 JOANNA ALBERTI | Crafty Ass Female

SUMMARY //

In this episode, the girls talk to Joanna about her background + the origin of philoSophies™.  She talks about what SHE handles in her business, and what parts of her business she gives over to licensing.

Joanna + the girls also discuss 'Influencer' Commerce, playing the 'comparison' game, and what works for her.

The importance of saying 'NO', taking breaks, and being there to pick up packages when UPS drops them off are also gems found in this episode!

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Joanna on her business priorities :

"You don't have to do what you think is how every business should grow. You don't have to be this big box business. I enjoy being small... If I never hit the 'millionaire dollar' mark, that's fine for me. I'm doing what I love to do, and I'm doing the best that I can, and I think that people enjoy my art, and I'm grateful for that..."

Joanna on dealing with the pressures of being a creative entrepreneur :

"...I put a lot of pressure on myself. I think everyone that is a creative entrepreneur does. You just have these unrealistic expectations sometimes, and social media doesn't help because it's like...I love social media. You can get so many great ideas or just feel supported and fulfilled that someone liked your post and things, but also you see...these amazing pictures and thousands and thousands of fans, and it's like: 'It's okay. I'm obviously doing something right because I continue to get orders and I'm continuing to grow..."

EP. 37 // Becoming the Artist She Is w/ Katie Smith

Today we have Katie Smith on the podcast. Katie is an artist + crafter located in Washington, USA. She loves anything + everything crafty – from sketching and painting to scrapbooking and art journaling, and even crochet and quilting. If it’s creative, she loves it! Her artwork focuses mainly on women, galaxies, and nature.  Katie shares all of her creative pursuits as well as creative tips and tutorials on her blog, www.studiokatie.com. Katie is a published artist in multiple magazines and books, including Creating Keepsakes, Stitch Craft Create, and Brush Mag.

EP 37 // KATIE SMITH | Crafty Ass Female.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, the girls talk to Katie about moving from Texas to Washington, being artistic at a young age, starting her blog 9 years ago, and how the 'feel' of blogging has changed.

Katie talks about her early influences, the Design Teams she was on, and brings home the point that ARTISTS DESERVE TO GET PAID. Period. (Yes!)

She also talks about how having an online-based business to use her strengths over the internet works extremely well since she is a self-proclaimed introvert, and what a typical week is like for her.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Katie on future plans for Studio Katie :

"I want to sell more original paintings and turn my artwork into more prints or stickers...more product-based a little bit... it's a little bit scary because I don't really know how, but I'll figure it out as I go along."
EP 37 KATIE SMITH | Crafty Ass Female

Katie on claiming her power as an artist :

"Artists deserve to get paid just as much as anyone else who works."

SO GOOD! See ya there! xoxo

EP. 33 // Extravagant Hope & Grace w/ Brandi Kincaid

Welcome to Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' : our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin can't wait to share with you!

Today we're talking to Brandi Kincaid, one of Kristin's artistic inspirations. Brandi is an illustrator and paper crafter who makes and records memories with her husband Andrew, and puppy Augie Roo, in Bellingham, Washington. She spends all her free moments listening closely, playing with paper and glue, and drawing a version of the world around her.

A few days a week you can find her helping guests and giving tours at her local art and history museum, which is, in her not so humble opinion, the best place to practice some of that listening she loves so much. When she isn't making a mess or dreaming up new designs, she's spending time at one of her favorite neighborhood bookshops, thrifting treasures, or watching episodes of Murder She Wrote, because nothing beats J.B. Fletcher.

33 BRANDI KINCAID blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, Brandi talks about being a collector in this world, how she moved into full-time freelance illustrating by organically allowing herself to grow, the practice of creating and keeping commonplace books, and shares the BEST ADVICE SHE'S EVER GOTTEN (!!!) with us.

The ladies also chat about how Brandi had to let go of the pressure she put on herself to use the tools she thought she SHOULD be using, and use instead what WORKS FOR HER, end of story.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Brandi on her organic growth in the industry :

"Things opened up as I opened up."

Brandi on TRYING & knowing your limits :

"At some point it's okay to decide: I've tried ENOUGH...and this is NOT the outlet for me.
I LOVE TRYING. I'm a BIG proponent of trying. I think we should all being trying, but I also think that TRYING at some point is NOT DOING, and it's okay to say 'I'm going to take that TRYING energy and put it toward something new that I'm going to WANT TO DO.' It's going to be okay after that. ...you have to always balance 'trying' and 'doing'."

Brandi on what's worthy to pull from everyday life & turn into art:

"I think everything is worthy. I think everything is worth remembering, documenting...it's LESS about WHAT, and MORE about WHEN...kind of the TIMING of it...I write down more than I share and that's because I share them on the timeline that then makes sense, so I'm not depending on things to be important in the moment...I'm always wanting more from the small moments - and they give it to me - but they give it me on their own schedule."
