Constellation & Co uses the power of words and the magic of snail mail to connect people and make us all feel less alone. Our line of cards and gifts are inspired by the events and occasions in life that are made sweet by close, honest relationships. Our work as Constellation & Co. is built for sharing joy and holding our loved ones close in the middle of pain.

Constellation & Co has been featured on a variety of publications such as Oh So Beautiful Paper, Creative Mornings, The Paper Chronicles, and more. Sara has been interviewed on podcasts such as Proof to Product, Let’s Talk About It, and The Postcardist talking about business, mental health, and her love of postcards.

When Sara’s not working at the shop, she’s sending snail mail to her loved ones, buying copious amounts of fountain pens, and spending time with her husband and son.

SUMMARY //

Sara McNally gives us her creative backstory from going to school for graphic design, designing greeting cards from home, working “terrible ad-agency jobs”, doing a letterpress printing internship, to ‘falling ass-backwards’ into owning her business. She talks about trying to figure out how to blend her love of making things, working with her hands, and writing.

Sara feels like her superpower is brevity + efficiency, and talks about the complexity of her designs is in their simplicity. Brilliant! She also talks about the abundance mindset vs. the scarcity mindset, ‘pruning back’ different aspects of her business, needing to learn how to delegate tasks to her team, + standing behind her business decisions.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Sara on being bold & networking in 2019:

“I have definitely been reaching out and looking for kindred spirits in the creative entrepreneurship world, and I’ve been trying to - in 2019 - put myself out there more often and just think about people out there as just friends I haven’t met yet.”

Sara on ‘SHOULD’ing all over herself:

“I spend a few days working from home, and Thursdays I’m home and everyone else is out of the house and I realize that is cherished time, like no one talks to me, no one else is in my orbit and I get to just like, hang out with the dog and do what I need to do.

It’s taken me so long to get rid of the, like, SHOULD mindset that if I have a day of childcare I SHOULD be at the shop. But I pay people to be a t the shop on Thursdays, so that I can get all my work done, and answer my emails, and record podcasts and do other things that are also really important for my life and my business. …It’s not so much that I don’t do the things that I want to be doing, it’s that I do them and then feel really guilty about them for some reason…”

EP. 38 // Philosophies on Small Business w/ Joanna Alberti

Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' is moving right along - and will be continuing through the end of August. It is our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin are thrilled to be able to share with you every Monday.

Today we have Joanna Alberti on the podcast. Joanna is an illustrator, product designer, and small shop owner located in Rochester, NY. She is the creator of philoSophies™ (pronounced fill-ahs-SO-fees) which is a greeting card + product line featuring the main character Sophie, her philosophies on different occasions, and inspirations on friendship, love, and confidence.

EP 38 JOANNA ALBERTI | Crafty Ass Female

SUMMARY //

In this episode, the girls talk to Joanna about her background + the origin of philoSophies™.  She talks about what SHE handles in her business, and what parts of her business she gives over to licensing.

Joanna + the girls also discuss 'Influencer' Commerce, playing the 'comparison' game, and what works for her.

The importance of saying 'NO', taking breaks, and being there to pick up packages when UPS drops them off are also gems found in this episode!

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Joanna on her business priorities :

"You don't have to do what you think is how every business should grow. You don't have to be this big box business. I enjoy being small... If I never hit the 'millionaire dollar' mark, that's fine for me. I'm doing what I love to do, and I'm doing the best that I can, and I think that people enjoy my art, and I'm grateful for that..."

Joanna on dealing with the pressures of being a creative entrepreneur :

"...I put a lot of pressure on myself. I think everyone that is a creative entrepreneur does. You just have these unrealistic expectations sometimes, and social media doesn't help because it's like...I love social media. You can get so many great ideas or just feel supported and fulfilled that someone liked your post and things, but also you see...these amazing pictures and thousands and thousands of fans, and it's like: 'It's okay. I'm obviously doing something right because I continue to get orders and I'm continuing to grow..."
