EP. 33 // Extravagant Hope & Grace w/ Brandi Kincaid

Welcome to Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' : our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin can't wait to share with you!

Today we're talking to Brandi Kincaid, one of Kristin's artistic inspirations. Brandi is an illustrator and paper crafter who makes and records memories with her husband Andrew, and puppy Augie Roo, in Bellingham, Washington. She spends all her free moments listening closely, playing with paper and glue, and drawing a version of the world around her.

A few days a week you can find her helping guests and giving tours at her local art and history museum, which is, in her not so humble opinion, the best place to practice some of that listening she loves so much. When she isn't making a mess or dreaming up new designs, she's spending time at one of her favorite neighborhood bookshops, thrifting treasures, or watching episodes of Murder She Wrote, because nothing beats J.B. Fletcher.

33 BRANDI KINCAID blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, Brandi talks about being a collector in this world, how she moved into full-time freelance illustrating by organically allowing herself to grow, the practice of creating and keeping commonplace books, and shares the BEST ADVICE SHE'S EVER GOTTEN (!!!) with us.

The ladies also chat about how Brandi had to let go of the pressure she put on herself to use the tools she thought she SHOULD be using, and use instead what WORKS FOR HER, end of story.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Brandi on her organic growth in the industry :

"Things opened up as I opened up."

Brandi on TRYING & knowing your limits :

"At some point it's okay to decide: I've tried ENOUGH...and this is NOT the outlet for me.
I LOVE TRYING. I'm a BIG proponent of trying. I think we should all being trying, but I also think that TRYING at some point is NOT DOING, and it's okay to say 'I'm going to take that TRYING energy and put it toward something new that I'm going to WANT TO DO.' It's going to be okay after that. ...you have to always balance 'trying' and 'doing'."

Brandi on what's worthy to pull from everyday life & turn into art:

"I think everything is worthy. I think everything is worth remembering, documenting...it's LESS about WHAT, and MORE about WHEN...kind of the TIMING of it...I write down more than I share and that's because I share them on the timeline that then makes sense, so I'm not depending on things to be important in the moment...I'm always wanting more from the small moments - and they give it to me - but they give it me on their own schedule."

It's a REALLY good one, and we hope you check it out! It's so worth the investment, and we don't say that lightly. GO! PLEASE! LISTEN! IT'S GREAT.

EP. 32 // Let's Get Feminist!

What was June on this podcast? Haa haa! If you just started listening to us this month, then know the show is not always filled with such heavy topics, as the last few were...but in truth, being a 'crafty ass female' means navigating issues such as how social media affects everything we do and how to maintain good mental health and how to be resourceful in a society that still upholds certain sexist social constructs, so let's get to it...

32 FEMINISM blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

Amanda + Kristin start by defining what feminism is and what it is to them. Spoiler Alert: "GIRLS RULE & BOYS DROOL" is NOT it! Later in the episode, we hear what inspired Kristin to become rukristin: feminist scrapbooker.

The girls also give examples from their real life of times they've picked up SEXIST VIBES while out in the world interacting & discuss how those vibes should not be easily dismissed. They are truths...they are your truth...and are telling of what is going on.

Feminism is about an EQUITABLE (not necessarily EQUAL) amount of importance & regard needing to be dispersed to every human, male or female, in order for them to live up to their full potential.

FAVORITE QUOTE THIS EP //

"It's not about whether or not you NEED feminism...the WORLD NEEDS FEMINISM. If you think it's about YOU as an individual person needing or not needing feminism...you don't get it yet...it's hard when you're trying to explain things to people who don't really see things outside of their own personal lense..." - Kristin

EP. 31 // MENTAL HEALTH REVISITED

Two months ago, Amanda + Kristin came out with EP. 22 of this podcast about MENTAL HEALTH - sharing their mental health history, what they've learned along the way, & different things that have helped - doing their part to destigmatize mental illness & bring awareness to how the struggle w/ it is 100% REAL and common.

In light of the recent tragic suicide deaths of both KATE SPADE and ANTHONY BOURDAIN, they felt the need to revisit this topic, dive deeper, and offer again - a candid & open conversation about it.

31 MENTAL HEALTH revisited blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

Amanda + Kristin start the conversation expressing their sadness over the loss of the amazing cultural icons Kate Spade & Anthony Bourdain earlier this month.

The girls discuss why it hit them so hard + how we crafty ass females need to reframe how we think about our own struggles in order to get the appropriate help we need.

This episode addresses our 'connection' issue which plays a part, how friends + family of mental illness sufferers can offer empathetic support, & how we might have adapted a 'happy go lucky' persona growing up which has insidiously hurt us in the long run. // Ladies, it's okay NOT to be okay.

EP. 30 // social media here & now

FOLLOW LIKE COMMENT. FOLLOW LIKE COMMENT. FOLLOW LIKE COMMENT. REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT. It seems like communicating and functioning in the middle of 2018 means taking it day by day, post by post, picture by picture, caption by caption, hashtag by hashtag (you get the point)...

A + K felt the need for an episode solely on social media since the topic has popped up in so many of our previous 29 shows from one angle or another, and since we as women need to become more aware of its pervasive nature so we can better protect ourselves while still utilizing it to keep connected with our friends and support our creative endeavors.

30 SOCIAL MEDIA blog post 02.jpg

SUMMARY //

Amanda + Kristin start the conversation talking about PROTECTION, and then ease into discussing 'big business' on the Internet using YOUR data for THEIR bottom line.

In the second half of the episode, A + K address the more indirect danger of the pervasiveness of the social media culture we now live in: the mental + emotional toll that it has. The girls also discuss the 'antidote' & what we could do as resourceful women to navigate through the 'mess'.

This episode contains a lot of the ins + outs behind the functioning of major social networks, and touches upon some major points that will come again in next week's culturally important episode.

FAVORITE QUOTE THIS EP //

"...I think of Instagram as this fun little space to share my stuff, to get content out there that I would love to be shared 100 times, never post anything that would make me feel...exposed, but at the same time you DO want to be vulnerable and real and authentic, so there's THAT battle...BUT then when you think of Instagram as this fun place to share and ONLY that, you're not also realizing that it's now 'the land of brands', the 'epicenter of advertisements', the 'posturing capital of the world'...the fact that it could labeled as those three things as well...you HAVE to be aware of that!" - Amanda

EP. 29 // GOALS for 2018 : MID-YEAR CHECK-IN

A + K are checking-in MID-YEAR ('cause WHOA: it's June already) with the goals they set at the start of 2018 & talked about back in EP. 06 of the podcast - what's worked, what hasn't worked... Let's jump right into it!

EP 29 GOALS MID-YEAR CHECK-IN // Crafty Ass Female.jpg

SUMMARY //

Amanda + Kristin discuss how the purpose of a mid-year check-in isn't to measure how successful or unsuccessful you've been at achieving your goals, but rather to assess WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED SO FAR  & how best to move forward.

A + K also talk about using a support system when it comes to achieving big goals & bouncing your status off another creative friend that could help you progress in a new way!

EP. 28 // The Art of Being (an Artist) with Melody Hansen

This is the last interview in our May series of interviewees, our first batch of conversations from some of the Craftiest Ass Females we know, and we couldn't have been prouder to share their stories + wisdom!

Today we're talking to Melody Hansen, one of Amanda's artistic inspirations. She is originally from Lausanne, Switzerland & currently living in Toronto, Canada, is a modern day artist that dabbles in graphic design, illustration, art direction, music, curation, + writing. Amanda recently took her creative workshop entitled The Art of Being (an Artist) + couldn't recommend it more!

28 MELODY blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, Melody Hansen talks about all the different ways she expresses her creativity, beginning with the time she spent on neopets!

The ladies also chat about Melody's evolution to becoming the modern day artist she is today, how she feels a lot of her work has been hand-in-hand with the internet, and art authenticity vs. popularity.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Melody on being creative & resourceful :

"I don't try to limit myself on what I can do, I mean I have all these ideas and things I want to accomplish...I still feel like there is a lot that can still be done, and so I guess the ideas that I have in my mind to me is what makes me creative, and finding those outlets and those platforms and those mediums that I can use...

...and resourceful, I think is the PEOPLE. I think the collaborations I've done in the past, the different type of people I've worked with from all sorts of different industries and organizations has been...the way that I have gotten to where I am now: keeping those people as the connections, but also building the friendships and relationships that I have."

KAM , KRISTIN , MEGAN , & AMY  planning Awesome Ladies Live 2017

Melody on creativity being her weapon of choice :

"I sort of see my work being my weapon of choice. I feel like when I have these internal mental battles - that I think we all do and we all face - to me creating is that weapon to kind of like, feel powerful and feel like I am still in control and I can silence whatever thoughts or whatever feelings that are negative or dark or...and that comes through my work and I think that's where all the feelings and mental health comes in."

She is a mom of three, wife to Phil, writer, creative, #plannerbabe, Happy Planner® Design Team member, child of God, group leader, Crafty Ass Female to the MAX, super-force + modern woman in the world today, who loves lettering, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, face filters, lip-synching in the car with the kiddos, etc. She's all around awesome, with so much grace + wisdom to share!

27 ERICA blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, Erica talks about choosing her 'YES's more wisely, making it a priority to be a good friend, the small group she + her husband lead in their home, & how God has revealed Himself to her through suffering.

The ladies also chat about the BOOK (!!!) Erica's in the process of writing, how she overcame the anxiety & was able to start, her break into the planning community, and quality over quantity on her personal social media channels!

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

Erica's modern take on Church teachings:

"...when I'm unpacking the Bible, one thing that I want it to speak to is to women who DON'T know the Bible, is to women who DON'T believe in God, and they can be like, 'Whoa, THAT'S IN THERE?! Whoa, it talks about THAT?! Whoa, I totally relate to that! ...and I just had no idea because growing up I never heard the Bible taught in that way..." ...so I'm very passionate about...telling stories in the scripture about women because women are a vital, crucial, heart of the Bible..."
KAM , KRISTIN , MEGAN , & AMY  planning Awesome Ladies Live 2017

Erica on comparison in the planner community:

"Man, I don't have, you know, 10,000 followers or 24,000 followers...when y'all chose me to be on the Design Team, I was like, 'WHY?!'...I do that comparison game...just getting over myself, getting over those things that I put in my head, or what others think about me. I think it's really easy in this community to care a little bit too much about what other people are thinking or saying..."

Also check out the ladies in their Patreon exclusive ‘After Chatter’ show, where you can sign up to watch a video of Amanda, Kristin, and Nita chat it up!

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

NITA ON DIVERSITY IN CRAFTING:

OUT OF NECESSITY. "Being on The Happy Planner® Design Team kind of catapulted who I am in this planner community because again...there weren't a lot of women of color on the major design teams...women of color aren't represented...

...how many other amazing, super-creative women of color that I've met in this community that don't have a fraction of my following ...their work is not as recognized & they are amazing illustrators, scrapbookers, women that color with the copics...

...part of that is I fit an image, and I've made it a point more to, like even with my natural hair...it's almost they're afraid if you're too strong, if you're too pro-black... you have to be very cautious of that... especally if you're on a PR team you are speaking on behalf of those brands, and for some of the women of color, they feel like some of the injustices and things that have gone on, they'd like to speak about them on their personal pages...but you risk not being able to represent these brands, or they don't want to be associated with that for FEAR that it's not as marketable, or it might rock the boat, or doesn't fit into this cookie-cut, this pristine brand that they have..."

NITA ON CHOOSING JOY:

"We can have pity parties in life, but again, it always takes me back to my grandmother saying: 'you need to leave your feelings under the pillows when you get up in the morning.' ...IT IS A CHOICE...usually in life, for me, when I've encountered tough situations, it has shaped me, in a way that only through experience you are able to do it. You can't take a shortcut...it's only through endurance you're able to get to the other side...the scripture tells us 'All things work together for good.'...it doesn't feel good to me, but God is still good...IT IS A CHOICE."

In honor of National Scrapbook Day coming up this weekend, the ladies of Crafty Ass Female bring you our personal memory keeping hero, the goddess of scrapbooking: Ali Edwards. (!!!)

Ali's passion resides in that very special place where the stories and images of life intersect. Her work includes memory keeping product and project design, teaching, and blogging. Author of four books about memory keeping, Ali is well known for authentically capturing everyday life with photos and words and creating memory keeping projects from those moments that pass by in an instant.

This episode kicks off our month of May of guest interviews with some of the craftiest ass females we know! YES!

24 ALI EDWARDS blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode, Ali discusses details about how she got started in the paper crafting industry, the inspiration behind her new Story Planner line, and her Week in the Life™ project - taking place next week, starting Monday, May 7th through May 13th.

The ladies also chat about social media in their Patreon exclusive ‘After Chatter’ show, where you can sign up to watch a video of them three chat it up!

Week in the Life™ //

ALI on Week in the Life™ :

"I am the main character in this story...it's all from my perspective. The other people around me are all these supporting characters..."

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //

ALI on being resourceful:

"Quick decision making...has been good for me in lots of ways...most of the projects that I do, I finish them, and part of that is because I don't spend a lot of time hemming and hawing...I have come to the conclusion that it's going to be good enough. I think that that serves me really well in moving forward with the stories that I'm telling, and getting to tell lots of other stories because I'm not stuck back here trying to figure out...trying to choose which photo of the ten photos...one photo is going to go in there and it's going to be good."

ALI on having seasons for her stories & creativity:

"There are times when I've got nothing! There's a whole lot of nothing coming out, and a whole lot of Netflix going in!"

EP. 23 // Podcasting + Patreon

Amanda + Kristin have been hosting this podcast for the past four months & releasing a show (or two) every week for your listening pleasure. In this episode, the girls talk about the growth + evolution that's taken place in such a short amount of time, and how bringing Crafty Ass Female to Patreon was the logical next step.

23 patreon blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode you'll hear A + K:

  • express gratitude to you listeners
  • discuss typing an idea vs. talking it out
  • relate how podcasting has helped them find their voices
  • talk about podcasting as a medium
  • SPILL THE BEANS on next week's show w/ our very first interviewee (IT'S BIG!!!)
  • explain about our Patreon page + how you can get access to exclusive content

So, What is Patreon?

"Patreon is a membership platform that makes it easy for artists and creators to get paid."

For A + K though,  Patreon is where our community is going to live. It is where the conversations started in each episode will be continued & built upon in a 'bonus content' type of format. It is where our listeners will get the opportunity to invest in a way that will have a direct link to special features and activities A + K will provide. . It's underdogs supporting underdogs, and we kinda like that. We need to stick together 4eva, don't you agree? // xoxo

EP. 22 // A + K talk Mental Health

A lot of people suffer from anxiety + depression their entire life, but never understand what they are experiencing can be an illness -- until fear + hopelessness flood every inch of their body + there is a blaring sign that SOMETHING. IS. WRONG.

We hope today's episode sheds light on why you might feel the way you feel, and let you know you're not alone. It is our part of this cultural movement to destigmatize mental illness & bring awareness to how the struggle w/ it is 100% REAL and common. <3 We are all in this together, friends.

EP. 21 // #Thursday3 + taking SELFIES

Here on Crafty Ass Female, particular themes seem to make their way into a lot of our episodes. Some of those themes include social media, the comparison trap, and fun creative challenges to try! Those themes can be found in today's episode as well "...but FIRST lemme take a selfie." ...

21 Thursday3 blog post.jpg

SUMMARY //

In this episode you'll hear Amanda + Kristin talking about selfies + Kristin's #Thursday3 weekly selfie challenge where she calls you to:

(1) take + post a photo of yourself,
(2) share three 'right now' things, and
(3) tag three of your friends to do the same

Kristin defends feeling awkward in photos, makes excellent points on why taking a photo of yourself is better than having others take a photo of you, & provides a tip for taking 'mirror' selfies!

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS EP //

"Don't underestimate the power of having a place for something...splurge on 'the place for something'...I am one of those people that negotiates in my head why I don't need it, but we're trying to give you permission to buy certain things that could be helpful..." -- Amanda

K's #TIMESUP LEGAL FUND CONTRIBUTION //

At the end of this episode, K mentions the #metoomovement + references #timesup. Here's some more information about the TIME'S UP Legal Defense Fund, which she'll be donating 50% of the proceeds from her destash sale and the me too movement that inspired this spark of dialog to begin.

TIME'S UP Legal Defense Fund helps to defray legal and public relations costs in select cases for those who have experienced sexual harassment or related retaliation in the workplace. The Fund is housed at and administered by the National Women’s Law Center, an established, national women’s rights legal organization. A network of lawyers and public relations professionals across the country will work to provide assistance to those who have experienced harassment or retaliation.  Access to prompt and comprehensive legal and communications help will mean empowerment for these individuals and long-term growth for our culture and communities as a whole.

The National Women’s Law Center will connect individuals who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace or related retaliation with attorneys who can provide legal assistance including a free initial consultation.

The Me Too Movement In 2006, Tarana Burke founded the me too. movement to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. Using the idea of “empowerment through empathy,” the me too. movement was ultimately created to ensure survivors know they're not alone in their journey.

EP. 14 // Comparison-itis

Do you got the 'ITIS'? ...you know...that monster inside your head that makes it reeeeaaallly hard NOT to compare yourself to other crafters, artists, and humans who you feel are just doing better than you are. There's a definite difference between feeling INSPIRED by who someone is + what they do, and catching the ITIS about it.

SUMMARY //

In this episode you'll hear Amanda + Kristin talk about the 'rut of the mind' called COMPARISON-ITIS.

They touch on a variety of topics including:
• looking 'behind the curtain' of Design Teams
• tapping into yourself for joy
