Welcome to Crafty Ass Female's 'Summer of Special Guests' : our second series of amazing, inspiring interviews with a badass bunch of creative & resourceful women that Amanda + Kristin are thrilled to be able to share with you!
Today we're talking to Danielle Spurge, a maker and craft business consultant who loves iced lattes and pop music. Through her work at The Merriweather Council, Danielle teaches creative people how to turn their crafty tendencies into profits. On her blog and podcast, Danielle aims to inspire and support makers in business and share insights from her eight years of experience selling handmade work online. Danielle believes in celebrating the reality of gainful self employment through craft and wants to help more artists, crafters and designers share their work with more confidence.
In this episode, Danielle Spurge shares how she 'just started' craft business, said 'YES' to everything, and leveraged Etsy to open herself to opportunities. She also talks about how that lead to her branching off into the craft business consultant she is today, teaching other makers how to make a profit off of their crafty tendencies.
Danielle also explains the idea behind 'leveraging' and 'optimizing' your visibility + presence, figuring out what the unique opportunities are on each platform, and goes into the difference between the audience on Instagram vs. the audience on Etsy.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE EP //
Danielle on starting her craft business :
"...that's basically how I started my business, from a place of like, 'Well, I may as well try this now' ...and so literally the day after graduation I just went home and slept for a while and then I started my business...it's just as simple as that. I just decided this was what I wanted to do and I just started doing it because I didn't know any better, so I didn't know if I was doing it right or wrong, I just was doing it."
Danielle on having a 'business bestie':
"Business is better with a friend. No one wants to do this alone. It's already hard enough. Why make it harder on yourself? Also of course we're all going to learn from our own experiences as we do things, but truthfully, we can not have ALL of the experiences ourselves. ...so we HAVE to learn from each other."
Danielle's advice to combat social media overwhelm:
"I tell people: you want to have ONE PASSIVE social media and ONE ACTIVE at least, and depending on what you like, you add something else in."
